3 Reasons Why Some People Don’t Lose Weight When Taking Hoodia
Posted on December 4th, 2009 No commentsWere you disappointed with your weight loss results when you tried hoodia? As with any weight loss aid, hoodia works for some and not for others. Why?
To answer this question, you should understand how hoodia works. There are three reasons why some people do not lose weight when taking hoodia. You might want to hold onto the bottle and give it another try.
Hoodia is a cactus grown in South Africa. Years ago, it was discovered that hoodia had an ability to control appetite when an anthropologist noted native hunters chewing on the stem while out on long hunts. They were able to stave off hunger when vegetation was sparse.
It was found that hoodia contains a compound known as p57. Hunger is triggered when our blood glucose levels drop, and p57 looks like glucose to the brain. In other words, p57 fools the brain and hunger is not triggered. You are able to go longer without eating because of p57 in hoodia. If you are diabetic, you definitely need to speak with your doctor as hoodia may not be appropriate for you.
So, some folks who try hoodia are indeed able to control hunger and lose weight by creating a caloric deficit. Others do not, and here is where the three reasons come into play.
Physiologically speaking, we eat because our blood glucose drops and we feel hungry. We all know most of us do not eat just to provide our body with fuel. We eat when we celebrate. We eat when we are upset, anxious or sad. Especially if food was given to you as a child as instant gratification (stop the tears, cheer you up), you may have some emotional hang-ups with food. You may still look at it as a comforting friend. Hoodia will not override this strong urge to eat.
Do you skip meals and then overeat when you finally do sit down to have a meal? Not only are you lowering your metabolism by doing this, but you run the risk of extreme hunger that hoodia cannot overcome. Lowering your metabolism also contributes to weight gain. It ends up being a “wash” where yes, you lowered your caloric intake, but you did not burn the fuel efficiently, so you either remained at the same weight or possibly gained weight.
Finally, there seems to be a prevailing attitude that weight loss can occur without eating properly and exercising. This cure-all approach to weight loss fails us every time. Lasting weight loss requires proper eating and exercise.
All of the above can be overcome and then hoodia can do its job and help you lose weight. If you feel sad, call a real friend and get away from the food. Eat small portions of healthy food throughout the day to avoid overeating. Go for a brisk walk every day.
